What is an asbestos test? Asbestos management plan
Asbestos testing is the process of testing materials that are suspected of containing asbestos. A potentially harmful material that has been commonly used in materials for coatings, roofing and pipe lagging.
Testing asbestos involves taking a sample of the suspected material and analysing them to see if there are any asbestos fibres present.
What is an ACM?
ACM is the abbreviation for asbestos containing materials. Therefore, when we perform asbestos testing, we are checking the suspected materials to see if they are ACM’s.
Are there different types of asbestos?
Yes, however three types of asbestos are more commonly found in ACM’s. These are:
- White Asbestos (Chrysotile)
- Brown Asbestos (Amosite)
- Blue Asbestos (Crocidolite)
How is Asbestos sampled and tested?
Before testing asbestos, asbestos sampling needs to be conducted. This is done by carefully taking a sample of the asbestos by breaking it off or using a piece that has already been separated.
Although, to date, you do not have to hold an asbestos licence for asbestos sampling it is highly recommended you leave sampling for a trained professional.
Taking a sample first involves dampening the sample, to reduce the risk of dust samples spreading or being breathed in, before placing the sample in a sealed polythene bag. This is then placed inside a second sealed bag before labelling and sending for testing.
What is an Asbestos Management Plan?
An asbestos management plan is created before any work is done on the ACM (asbestos containing material). A plan will involve steps that are laid out to ensure the ACM is removed safely and efficiently by a licensed professional.
An asbestos management plan must include:
- Who is responsible for manging the asbestos?
- The asbestos register you have made
- Any plans you have for work on the asbestos
- The schedule that is used for monitoring the condition of the asbestos containing material
- Informing the relevant people about your decision
This plan is created in a way that Is easily readable, easy to edit and easy to access as and when it is needed.
